Search "bathroom remodel cost Connecticut" and every site on the first page gives you a different answer. One says $12,000 to $30,000. Another says $9,760 to $54,900. A third quotes a price per square foot.
They are all technically right, and none of them are useful. A range that wide is not an estimate. It is a shrug.
Here is the more honest version from a contractor who takes Connecticut bathrooms apart for a living: nobody can price your bathroom without standing in it, and the reason has almost nothing to do with the tile you pick.
The four things that actually move the number
1. Whether the layout stays put.
This is the biggest fork in the road. If the toilet, sink, and tub stay where they are, you are doing a replacement. If any of them move, you are doing plumbing, and in a lot of Connecticut housing stock that means opening a floor.
Same bathroom, same finishes, two completely different projects.
2. What is behind the wall.
Connecticut has a lot of homes built between 1950 and 1980, and a lot of original tub surrounds still in them. When a surround has been quietly leaking for a decade, the problem is not the surround. It is the framing and the subfloor behind it.
Nobody can see that before demolition. A contractor who hands you a firm number without acknowledging it is either guessing or planning an uncomfortable conversation with you on day two.
3. Whether it is a tub-to-shower conversion.
Converting a tub to a shower is not a swap. It usually means pulling the tub, reframing the opening, adjusting the drain, and installing a new base and walls. It is one of the most requested projects we do and it is consistently more involved than people expect going in.
4. The things that get added once the wall is open.
Most bathrooms need more than the homeowner planned for. Ventilation is the one almost everybody skips. A real exhaust fan is minor next to the rest of the project, and it is the difference between a bathroom that lasts fifteen years and one that grows mold in three.
Why the online numbers are so far apart
Because they are averaging different projects.
A $10,000 figure and a $50,000 figure can both be accurate. One is a same-footprint tub-to-shower conversion with an acrylic system. The other is a full gut with relocated plumbing, custom tile, and frameless glass. Average them together and you get a number that describes nobody's bathroom.
The useful question is not what a bathroom remodel costs in Connecticut. It is which of those two projects yours is. That is answerable in about twenty minutes standing in the room.
Where the money actually goes
Labor is the largest line item on most bathroom projects, not materials. That surprises people who have just spent a weekend picking tile.
It also explains why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive outcome. Labor is where a contractor cuts to win a bid, and labor is what you are actually buying. Waterproofing behind the wall is invisible on day one and decisive in year five.

The project you actually want, not the one that fits a number you saw online
Room for what is behind the wall, because in a house older than about forty years there is usually something
The unglamorous items: ventilation, waterproofing, and blocking in the walls for grab bars later
That last one costs almost nothing while the drywall is already off, and it is the item homeowners most often wish they had done. It means a grab bar, a bench, or a handheld can go in years later without opening the wall again.
A note on one-day bathroom systems
We install them and they are legitimate for the right project. A same-footprint tub or shower replacement with an acrylic system genuinely can be done in a day.
What a one-day system cannot do is move plumbing, repair a rotted subfloor, or change your layout. If a company tells you a full bathroom remodel is a one-day job, ask what happens when they open the wall.
How to get a real number for your bathroom
An in-home estimate is the only way anyone can price this honestly. It takes about twenty minutes and it produces a number you can budget against instead of a range you cannot.
